Camping is the quintessential activity to do over any break: summer, winter, or spring. It’s a way to get out in the open, be one with nature, unplug from social media, and hang out with friends or family. It’s always great to unwind in the middle of nature and even more so to take a break from television, phones, and e-mails.

Whether it’s summer camp away from your parents or a weekend hiking with friends, there’ll always be plethora of stories to tell at the end of the trip. The last time I went camping, my girlfriends and spent three and a half hours in the fresh air of the Redwoods and almost got lost right before sundown since we tried to cut through a different way. It was a little unnerving but we found our way back, after eventually finding the original trails from earlier in the day. Lesson learned, just stay on the designated trails, folks.

Alright, so think twice if you ever want to go camping with me and my girlfriends. For the most part, aren’t we all winging it when out in the wilderness? Okay, maybe not. Guess that’s what boy and girl scouts learn. Well, my mom never let me get past orientation for the girl scouts, sorry to say. So, every time I’m camping, it ultimately is an adventure. I’m sure a bunch of people feel the same way, right?

These 17 campers share their craziest travel stories:

1.

Went camping on the beach with my family and my best friends family. we were all sitting in front of the tent in the dark telling stories. Suddenly my brother decides he needs to crap, so he grabs a flashlight and walks off into the darkness. but he walked towards the cliffs, and for some reason set the flashlight down at such an angle that we were all blessed with a 50 foot shadow of my brother taking a dump on the side of the cliff. it was the funniest thing i have ever seen.

2.

I got stranded up a lake with only half my camping gear when my boat broke down (we were planning to make two runs). My brother and his friend hiked out to get someone to tow us out the next day. My friend and I stayed overnight. We had all of our food and beer, but no cooking untensils whatsoever. I found out that you can make almost anything out of beer cans! We became tin-smiths around the camp fire. We made a pan to fry our bacon in, cut the top off another can to boil eggs in; we even made a working drip coffee maker. The coffee was good too. And of course you all already know how to make a pipe for ahem tobacco. Now I’m sure all of this will probably give us alzeimers, but it was worth it.

3.

When I was a kid me and my family went camping at a state park. I heard this very loud growling sound at night. I slowly crept out of my tent and saw that others in my family were doing the same. Then we all realized it was our grandfather about 200 yards away snoring. I know sounds travel far at night but damn.

4.

Fought off a rabid fox with a branch and a pocket knife. Slept with some hippies. Drank what I sincerely hope was homemade rootbeer with Jersey pineys.
