I thought my dad was THE authority on all issues. Not like, in a glamorous, adoring way, but more in the sense that basically everything was his fault. He got mad at me once because after painstakingly convincing me that desert storm wasn’t his fault, and also was not exactly down the street, I asked him why he’d let that jesus guy get killed. Exasperated, he said he saw a commotion and assumed a it was a grocery store grand opening and that he’d pay more attention next time. I didn’t talk to him for a week.

I grew up in the midwest where tornado drills in schools are a thing. For a long time I thought the reason we were told to stay away from windows during a tornado was because the tornado, if it saw you, would make a special effort to f*ck up your house in particular. This was not helped by watching Twister, the movie about tornadoes chasing people.
