21 Make-up Artists Admit Their Worst Clients Imaginable

The worst experience I had was a prom makeover where she not only showed up late, but she expected me to do a full makeover in thirty minutes since her prom started in an hour. She was super chill while I was doing her complexion but when I started on the eyes it was this insane ordeal. When I’m doing a makeover I listen to the client’s guidelines, we decide on colors, and then I just do my thing. This f*cking girl. She was crazy specific about what she wanted and insisted on showing me blurry instagram pictures of her regular look. She kept grabbing the mirror and inspecting her eyeshadow every thirty seconds. She’d grab q-tips and wipe off eyeshadow so it would become uneven. She kept running out into the mall to argue with her mom. By that point she was well past the hour appointment we had scheduled her for. At the end I just had to step away and ask our esthetician to finish up because I had reached my limit and was already twenty minutes over my shift.

Had a bride show up an hour late reeking of booze, who then informed me she had yet to take a shower. I was literally applying her eyelashes (she still insisted on the intense smokey eye and elaborate up-do we had agreed on at the trial) at the SAME TIME they were getting her into the dress and the mothers were in the other room telling all the guests that the ceremony was 40 minutes behind schedule because the “makeup girl was taking too long.”

I had a lady book in with her daughter as early as possible. I was doing the mum, coworker doing the daughter. The mum doesn’t wear much makeup but her daughter insisted that I use one particular foundation of ours which is the heaviest coverage we have. Heavy. I agree and go to pick out her shade. This lady is vastly different in the face than in the body. She has a major yellow undertone in her chest and her face is pink. I tell her I’m going to match her to her chest and she threw a hissy fit saying she doesn’t want to look a different colour. I said that’s fine but your professional photos won’t come out as flawless as you want. She also hated the coverage and blamed me for it even though I advised against it. Half way through the makeover she’s like, “Can you hurry up? Ugh. We have to go!!!!” I finished her up but she still had to wait for her daughter to be finished.

I was doing prom makeup for a 17-ish year old girl. She had brought in a picture of a super glittery purple smokey eye. Throughout the whole makeover she had a mirror in her hands and watched as I did everything and never said a word even when I asked if she liked it. At the very end I stepped away to get some setting spray, when I turned back she had her hands on her eyes and was rubbing them vigorously like she was trying to scrub the makeup off with her palms. She rubbed the glitter all over her face and smeared everything. She said she hated it and demanded I redo it, and then got mad because she was going to end up being late if I did the whole thing all over again.
