Sat around having dinner with them one night and the father in law asks my ex and I if we wanted to get married. We both say yes, we’d like to one day, to which the mother in law replies ‘but what’s the point? You don’t want children.’ I told her it was because I wanted to commit to her son and spend my life with him. I could tell she totally didn’t get it. After a few minutes of silence, she pipes up with ‘to be honest, if you’re not going to have children, what’s the point in being alive?’

Well, my MIL once held a loaded gun to my fiance’s head. Would have shot him, too, if he didn’t get such a good hold on the gun before she could pull the trigger. I believe that day she was on benzos and alcohol, and probably had some opiates in the mix too. She probably doesn’t remember that day, but I do.

My then 2-year-old son was ill. Doctors couldn’t figure out why. My ex MIL said there was an evil presence in the household (because I wasn’t her religion) causing the illness.

My husband is first-gen Korean American. My MiL disliked me for being white when we were dating but when he told her he wanted to marry me? She seriously threatened to kill herself. My FiL, a psychiatrist, had to threaten commitment to knock some sense into her.
