My dad said that my pet hermit crabs ran away while I was at summer camp. He had actually just forgot to feed them. For years, I thought that they had run off to form some sort of runaway hermit crab colony where they would finally be free of their bonds of oppression.

When I was a child I caught my mother putting money under my pillow for the tooth fairy. She immediately told me that the tooth fairy couldn’t make it that day and asked her to do it in her place. I believed this until I saw her putting all the presents out for Santa and she used the exact same story.

When I was a child my grandma had bought me a pet goat. I named him Happy Birthday, and my family agreed to keep him at my grandma’s house. I had him for a couple of years, until one day he went missing. My grandma said that he probably ran away. About ten years later me and my family were sitting around the table when the conversation of my him came up. Turns out my grandma had killed my goat because he was getting too big and was eating all her grass. I ate the stew she made with him. I’m not mad but I can’t believe I found this out ten years later.

Parents told me that my uncle was murdered because his “friend” at a rival company was jealous of my uncle’s financial success (this was when I was 12). Found out two years ago that in actuality my uncle was sleeping with his “friend’s” wife (am now 27).
