Photographers Share the Saddest Thing They’ve Shot

I was in Israel this past January and I saw this homeless man praying at the Kotel (Western Wall) this one was pretty intense for me.

A huge storm blew through town. One of those “once every 50 years” kinda things. Stuff was destroyed, everyone’s power was out… all that stuff. We called my in laws and found out they had power at their house, but it was about 45 minutes away in the country. On the way there, in a cow pasture was a sign that said “Abortion stops a beating heart”. Right in front of the sign was a dead calf that hadn’t survived the storm. Its mother was standing over it, just making the most awful and sad sound I could imagine.

For me it was around this time last year in Washington DC. The newspaper I was working for told me to run to the metro and take a photo of the major police presence that day. When I got there I found out there was a jumper on the tracks and I had to try my best to get a good photo of the situation. I ended up taking a photo of the body as they removed it. I’ll never forget the look on his face when they pulled him up.

A wife crying at her husband’s funeral. This was the most difficult shoot I’ve ever done.
