30 Pieces Of Popular Life Advice People Say You Should Never Follow

If you love something let it go and if it comes back, that’s how you know…. like no!!! If I love someone and we let each other go, it was probably for a damn good reason lol

“God won’t give you more than you can handle.”
Umm no where in the Bible does it say that. In fact, life tends to give plenty of people more than they can handle. I hate that saying because people need to know they are allowed to feel overwhelmed and out of control. You are allowed to break. You are allowed to ask for help. God gives us grace, but nowhere does he promise he won’t give you more than you can handle.

“Once you are a mum/dad you will understand.” Well, I’m a mum now, an honestly understand some of the more questionable stuff my parents did even less. We are all human and make mistakes, but as parents we should try to explain stuff, even the awkward/boring/scary stuff to our kids. I wish sometimes my parents would have been more honest and just said “we don’t have money/ don’t agree with you/are tired”, etc. Certain situations are a grey area and others are a case-by-case scenario. My parents are great an all but I do wish we had had real conversations growing up instead of this horrible short-hand phrase when things got conplicated.

‘Be kind always, no matter what?’ Really? Even if you feel so small, and you feel disrespected and everything? Girl stop, learn to fight SOMETIMES, let them understand why you feel what you feel, because if you dont do that, they wont stop and you wake up one day and that little ounce of dignity and respect you have for yourself is gone, just because youre kind no matter what.

People always say that when you stop looking for love, that’s when you’ll find it. But if everyone followed this advice, no one would ever meet anyone.

“If it makes you happy, then you should do it”
Yea ok but what about people who think murdering people will make them happy? Or on a less drastic note, what if what makes you happy is not practical or will hurt others around you that you care about. You just can’t always apply that in every situation, and I think it can be dangerous because it could be an excuse for people to justify their crappy behavior by saying “well it makes me happy”

“You have to love yourself first before you can love someone else.” Complete and utter bullshit, and very damaging to a young, mentally ill me. My depression, anxiety, and eating disorder made it so I absolutely hated myself. This saying made me feel like I was incapable of and underserving of meaningful relationships, which in turn made me isolate myself even more, which only made my mental illnesses worse. You don’t have to love yourself before you can love other people. The love you have for others is what will carry you through the times that you don’t love yourself.

“All you need is love”

It’s a nice sentiment and all, but it’s really kind of bullshit.

Live each day like it’s going to be your last- Let me tell you if I did that, everyday a bunch of people are getting roundhouse kicked in the face for any or no reason, my credit card statement will say Maserati for recent purchases, and at the end of the day I would be in a good coma from eating all the sticky buns in the bakery (btw-fuck you Howard I got the last one and all of them you miserable prick). Honestly, I just don’t have the energy or money to do that everyday. Unrealistic bullshit advice that will get me broke, fired, and serving a life sentence.
