For those who have siblings in their lives, they know firsthand how truly annoying and mean they can be.
Coming from someone with two sisters, life wasn’t always a day at the beach. We fought, we screamed, we sometimes even got into slap-fights over clothes and “bedroom territory.” Long story short–having older sisters wasn’t always “amazing.” When I was younger, I always wished I could be an only child. But, as I got older, I learned to really appreciate having siblings–especially sisters. They taught me everything I needed to know about growing up, dating boys, fashion, dealing with my parents, and even getting my period–thanks y’all.
Turns out, having sisters is more than just having someone to look up to. According to a study published in The Journal of Family Psychology, having a sister promotes positive mental health in individuals. The study surveyed 400 families with multiple siblings between the ages of 10-14, with results showing that those with sisters had a lot of positive qualities.
Researchers concluded that those with sisters had a greater ability to empathize, communicate, and resolve conflicts. As well, they were better at talking out their problems. Additionally, boys who have sisters are found to be better at communicating with other women when in a relationship. Researchers also claim that when parents pass away, sisters are the ones who keep the family together.
If you’re fortunate enough to have a sister–while they may get on your nerves almost daily–make sure to tell them how much you love and appreciate them. Afterall, they do have a hand in making you a better person.
