Getting pregnant can be an emotionally and logistically difficult process, as any couple who has struggled to do so knows all too well. Whereas most couples who fail to conceive have fertility complications to blame, one Chinese couple has only themselves—and maybe an education system bereft of any sort of sexual schooling or advice—to fault for their issues.
An unnamed husband, 26, and wife, 24, hailing from Bijie city in China, had spent four years trying to conceive before doctors informed them they had mistakenly been practicing anal sex.
According to Metro UK, obstetrician Liu Hongmei realized something was very wrong after asking the wife several questions about her medical history. The doctor was particularly alarmed to hear that though the couple had sex regularly, the wife reported that the experience was still “unusually painful” every time and that she only suffered through it because of her desire to be pregnant.
Dr. Liu at first assumed the woman was afflicted with a gynecological disease. But after she examined the wife, and found her to still be a virgin, Dr. Liu inspected the woman’s anus. She discovered she was able to “fit three fingers” inside, at which point the reasons for the couple’s failure to conceive became quite apparent.
The good doctor here learned the couple had been having anal sex during their entire marriage.
She explained how the couple’s families were “giving them a lot of stress” about getting pregnant. The doctor reportedly handed each of them a sex-ed handbook and drew out some sexual “guidelines” before sending them home.
The sex-ed book and guidelines appeared to work, seeing as the wife reportedly became pregnant several months later. The pair informed the newly-retired doctor they were expecting, according to Metro UK, and sent along 100 eggs and a live hen as gifts for her helpful advice.
“Four years of marriage and neither the husband nor wife knew how to get pregnant. Couples so lacking in general knowledge are very rare,” said Dr. Liu. “But it is not uncommon for people to lack or have misconceptions regarding sexual knowledge.”
