35 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Until Right Now

15. Chyler Leigh, who plays Lexie, spent two days under the plane wreckage when filming the crash.

Instead of getting in/out of the set (she was stuck under a plane), the actress stayed there for two days while filming.

14. The blood on the show isn’t real blood.

Apparently, it’s red Jell-O and a lot of silicone.

13. Jesse Williams was a teacher before he broke into acting.

The actor taught high school, middle school, and elementary school before becoming an actor.

12. Sarah Drew went into labor the same time as April.

Drew said:

“It was a big, long 10-hour work day of doing the labor and delivery scene on the show. And, I went home, it was 8 p.m. and at 6 a.m., I woke up with a really intense contraction three-and-a-half weeks early, so [I] didn’t think I was in labor.” She was! Hannah spent 11 days in the NICU, but was thereafter doing “great.”

11. The stories on the show happened in real life.

According to Debbie Allen, aka Catherine Avery and a director on the show, the writers use real surgery stories for the scenes.

“Our writers look at journals for cutting-edge medical stories. Our show is saving lives every week.”

10. Every single episode is named after a song.

And, the song ties into the episode’s plot.

9. The names on the surgery board are real people.

To make things interesting, the board is filled with names of members of the crew and those who work behind-the-scenes of the show.

8. Ellen Pompeo said she is “quitting acting” after Grey’s ends.

The actress said in 2014 that she doesn’t consider acting a noble career.

I definitely feel myself transitioning. I don’t find acting terribly empowering. I don’t find acting to be a particularly noble way to make a living. I’m not saving anybody’s life, I’m not a teacher, I’m not working for UNICEF. I don’t think I’m some big deal.”

7. However, Rhimes says the show will continue until Pompeo decides to leave.

Rhimes and Pompeo both know there is no “Grey’s Anatomy” without Meredith Grey, and Rhimes has said in several interviews she will continue the show as long as Pompeo wants to.

6. Sara Ramirez was on Broadway before playing Callie Torres.

Ramirez was starring in award-winning music Spamalot when ABC executives pitched her for “Grey’s.” She said on The Oprah Winfrey Show that they reached out to her after loving her performance on Broadway.
