17 People Admit the Worst Thing They’ve Done To a Server

Once went to a local, cash-only diner. Sat down while the server walked by for a good ~10-15 minutes and never even looked at me..seemed to even avoid eye contact. Finally, a cook walked over and said “hey man, you been helped yet?” Told him what was going on and he said “sorry for that – what do ya want?” So I gave him my order. Server came by ~10 minutes after that…finally ‘ready to serve me’. Told her I had been helped. Confused her, as she was the only server working. Anyway, the cook brings out my food and I eat. When the server rings up my bill, I pay and call over the cook. Tip him 50% in front of her, stare her down one last time, and walk out.

We waited 15 minutes to get drinks, and then he said he’d be right back to take our order. Well after another 15 minutes, we left a couple bucks on the table for the drinks. Then we walked up to the manager and told him our service was unacceptable, and we’d never go back to the restaurant again. We were the only people in the restaurant and there was absolutely no reason for him to be chatting up the waitresses instead of serving us.

I really don’t know how Chili’s is so popular. The food and service are always terrible. One time, after receiving the check, we waited over 20 minutes for someone to pick up my credit card. Nobody ever came. We were able to scrape by exactly enough to pay the exact dollar amount owed in cash while using a $5 off coupon. We didn’t have enough cash for any tip and just left the amount owed. I usually am a pretty generous tipper (20% minimum), but I didn’t feel bad about leaving a $0 tip in this situation. I haven’t been back to Chili’s since.

Was at a Denny’s (bad idea 1) at 2am (bad idea 2) and with a group of about 7 people. We order, food takes a bit longer to come out, but we assume that’s because we’re a big group. I walk to the bathroom at one point, and I see out server in the kitchen, eating a sandwich. No big deal. We get the check, and sure enough, there’s 8 entrees ordered, in a group of 7. The extra item was a sandwich. I asked her about it, and she said we had to pay for it, and called the manager over and said that we were trying to get out of paying for this item. We ended up smashing a whole sauce cup of queso into the little receipt book, and left 3 pennies in the mess.
