19 Tips For Self-Defense Everyone Should Know

17.

Despite what martial arts movies would suggest, there is no 100% reliable way for an unarmed person to defend themselves against someone with a knife, let alone a gun. If violence seems likely, remove yourself from the situation. If you can’t remove yourself, do anything you can to de-escalate it. Fight only as an absolute last resort.

18.

Go for the unholy trinity: Neck, knees, and eyes. This will drop or incapacitate basically any attacker. If this is self defense and not getting in a scrap down the pub for fun on the weekend, you fight like your life depended on it and GTFO.

19.

Don’t waste time or money on anything calling itself a “women’s self-defense class.” Take a real self-defense class. You don’t necessarily have to aim for a black belt, but I think a good sensei/instructor will understand if you say you want to learn some basic things to protect yourself and will help you determine how much you should learn. You don’t need to be athletically inclined, thin or super-strong to take one either.
