“Alright bud, you ready?” “Yep. Make sure your pistols loaded.” “It is.” This was said to my best friend Roy in 1968. We were both tunnel rats in Vietnam with the 12th Cavalry Regiment. We were about to go down into a tunnel together. He told me to make sure my pistol was loaded. I said “It is.” And it was. But if forgot to cock it. And thats what made all the difference. We both went down together, I came up alone.

“I’ll try not to be drunk the whole trip. See you when I get back.” Said to my mum 2 days before I was heading to Thailand with a group of friends. She was then hit and killed by a distracted driver on her way home from work, 50m from her front door, the next evening.

“Go get drunk and fail to lose your virginity.” My best friend who was hit by a car the same night.

“Gotta go, I’m playing PlayStation” My dad committed suicide when I was 11. Called to tell me that he loved me, and not knowing what was going to happen next, I was far more concerned with my game. Still haunts me.
