Photographers Share the Saddest Thing They’ve Shot

In the 90s I was doing some freelance work for a couple local newspapers so I was often following the police scanner. I heard a call for police fire for a vandalized car that was on fire so I thought it might make some interesting pictures. I pulled up and only one PD car was there, the FD hadn’t arrived yet. The car was completely engulfed in flames so I snapped a few frames with my tele and stayed far back to make sure I wasn’t in the way. Only realized after I’d shot about a half a dozen frames that I could see someone slumped on the steering wheel. Turned out some guy had parked his car, dumped a can of gasoline inside, got in and ignited it.

I would say shooting the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy on Long Beach Island, NJ, and Hurricane Katrina in the Lower 9th Ward.

I did some shots at a veterinary office and was allowed to take pictures of a dog getting prepped for being euthanized.
