11. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Ok, yes, this challenge did have some merits, the biggest two being that it raised awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and also generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for ALS research.
The downside? People have actually gotten injured in the name of medicine. Buckets full of water and ice are deceptively heavy. Maybe we need a new internet challenge to spread awareness about that.
