My parents caught me watching porn when I was 13. They were furious and horrified. I was never allowed to be alone for months after that. I was even forced to go to counseling for a while. Fast forward a few years and I receive my new Macbook Pro. I opened it up and my mom looks at me and says “No porn”. I look her dead in the eye and say “No promises”. The look on her face was priceless!

When I was eleven I was staying the night at a friends house and she mentioned that sometimes people put pictures of themselves naked on the Internet. I was a ridiculously sheltered child. I didn’t know what sex was, or how people had babies, or why you would be naked on the Internet. We looked at a bunch of porn out of sheer curiosity, because her parents were very catholic and mine were also very strict and there was no way we were getting answers from them. Well, his dad found out about it (computer history I suppose) and called my parents, and they had the end all be all of meltdowns. Lecturing me for hours, demanding to know what was wrong with me. Eventually they settled on grounding me for four months. Without any attempt to put into context the variety of things I had just seen. Eleven year old me was very, very confused.

I’ve never been able to understand the problem that parents have with porn and their kids especially teenagers. My mom used to get my brother porn magazines after seeing he was looking at a playboy, she didn’t want him looking at playboy because she didn’t want him to have an unrealistic portrayal of women (since they are so airbrushed) and got him ones that were more “natural” I guess is the word.
