17 Real Government Projects So Bizarre, Terrifying, and Ill-Conceived They Belong in a Movie

4. The Stargate Project

Having a bunch of psychics on your side would present a huge strategic advantage during the Cold War (or any war, for that matter). Any four-year-old who’s wished for the ability to read minds could wrap their head around that.

Unfortunately, the people responsible for this project – grown ass men – were unable to wrap their heads around how woefully stupid they were being when they green-lighted this.

Because no matter how bad you want it to be real, ESP is – at best – just a talent for ripping off gullible people, like, I don’t know… the CIA. And that’s it.

5. Porn Doubles for Dictators

In spite of the fact that this has never succeeded, this gambit has been around for a long, long time.

It originated as a plot to overthrow communist dictators, but more recently, it’s been used to mar the reputations of mideast political figures and terror group leaders.

The basic gist is this: you make a video ‘starring’ the figure you’re trying to discredit, and show him doing all kinds of things that are taboo in their culture. Gay sex, pedophilia, drinking, etc… Then you circulate it around and try to pass it off as the genuine article.

So, yea, somewhere out there, there’s an actual video of a guy who looks a lot like Osama bin Laden drinking whiskey and getting intimate with a little boy.

It’s certainly not the only problem with this plan, but it’s worth noting that in many cases, they got the taboos wrong. So even if they’d believed it, no one would have cared anyway.

6. Project MK Ultra

The name ‘Project MK Ultra’ is terrifying enough as it is. But guess what? The details are even more chilling.

Let’s set the stage. It’s a top-secret government lab. Probably underground. Dangerous chemicals, hallucinogenic drugs, and other ‘mystery substances’ line the walls in creepy-looking vials. Human test subjects scream in terror. You’ve seen a sci-fi movie before. You know what we’re talking about.

But did we mention that these experiments were all carried out on American citizens – some without their consent or knowledge? Or that the purpose with a capital “P” was to find a way to brainwash people and create an army of human zombies?

Zoinks.
