My mother and father split when I was a baby, so I never knew I had a brother. My dad had another son with another woman. So one day when my estranged father called me up and told me my brother had died, I said, “Wow. I didn’t even know he was ever alive. How did he die?” “He accidentally hanged himself.” “How does someone accid– oh.” Pause. And then the line from Californication popped into my head. “Look, I’m all in favor of a good stroke-n-choke, but you’ve gotta use the buddy system!”

I’m still not sure if this is what happened. I can never get a straight answer as to what really happened from anyone and don’t want to ask my cousin cos we aren’t close but her newly wedded husband committed suicide by inhaling helium.
