I have an uncle who does research at UT. He left campus one day and couldn’t find his car, so he reported it as stolen. He found it 2 months later where he had originally left it. He does stuff like that constantly. The absent-minded professor stereotype exists for a reason.

I met my cousin from India who got a 95 in Math and such, but I tried to test his problem solving. He learned the Pythagorean theorem, but couldn’t even use it properly when I tested him. He just put the 2 sides (one was hypotenuse) into the a2 + b2 formula, and gets something that doesn’t work. He may be educated, but all he can do is cram, and forget the next year.

I had a very unfortunate conversation with an MIT graduate at a wedding recently. I was chatting with the bride about my daughter, and I mentioned that she had been a water birth. The MIT person interrupted to say “Excuse me, you know water births are total bullshit, right?” I was stunned that someone could have that little sense of how to interact with humans.
