I went into a “pub” in Richmond VA and asked the bartender if I could work for a meal. He asked me to swab out the men’s room. When I was done they gave me a shepherds pie and a pint of beer.

Being a poor hungry student, a friend and I decided to bin dive. Got 10 bags of potatoes and so much bread we gave a loaf to a homeless drunk on the way back!

When I was broke and semi-homeless, I sat on a box, played a guitar and sang songs to downtown tourists. I put my case out for tips with a little sign on the lid, “Doggy bags make great tips.” The sign was true – I never ate so good, before or since.

Was snowed in for 24 hours and had to knock on the neighbor’s door (apartment building so I was still inside). Traded some toilet paper for a frozen pizza. We both won.
