My sister and I were at the bar of a little hotel we were staying at in Amsterdam, there was a really cute young guy tending the bar. My sister ordered a screwdriver, he looks confused but says okay and vanishes in the back room behind the bar for a few minutes, eventually returning with an actual screwdriver. My sister had a good laugh over that one and told him he was absolutely adorable before explaining she was actually asking for a vodka & orange juice.

After I finished high school I went on a eurotrip. I was in Berlin for my 18th birthday, so I proceeded to get absolutely shitfaced. I wound up thinking a prostitute was just some German girl hitting on me. Somehow despite speaking German, and having German family I just never realized prostitution was an open, legal thing in Germany. That was awkward to say the least.

I was in My Tho, Vietnam sitting on the front patio of a really nice restaurant that had a small hotel on the upper floors. This old guy who is missing most of one arm and part of a hand and is covered in visible scars sits beside us and starts talking to me in Vietnamese. I know by His age that the injuries are from the Vietnam War, He keeps talking and gesturing with His stump and I’m like no, no, no not American don’t blame me. After about 5 minutes of this I tell the GF to give the old guy a few bucks to get rid of Him, She offers Him like 50,000 dong 3 or 4 dollars and I hear explosive laughter from behind us I turn to see the restaurant staff and the Female manager all laughing at us. The manager approaches us apologising profusely and tells us this Man is Her father and He owns the restaurant and the hotel. I have never felt so small or so stupid.

I once went to Turkey and asked for an icetea peach at a restaurant. He thought I said “piƧ”, which means bastard in Turkish. He flipped out on me.
