29 “I’m Getting Old” Moments

19.

The moment I knew I was old was in the summer of 2007, when I was but 23. My dad and I were driving home from my grandparents’ house and listening to the classic rock station, which was playing the usual Led Zeppelin/Mötley Crüe/Dire Straits, that sort of thing. Then they played Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. A few songs later they played Basket Case by Green Day, and I thought to myself “Oh, shit! Songs I grew up with are now classic rock?”

20.

I’m a teacher and I googled, “Cool youth slang nowadays” for a lesson I was planning.

21.

I made a reference to “Today Was a Good Day” by Ice Cube, and none of the people I work with understood it. I’m only 29 and I work with 23 year olds. It’s insane how so few years can lead to such a generational gap.

22.

I was wearing a Daft Punk shirt, and some highschool chick commented that they’re her favorite dubstep band.

23.

I work with a lot of teens and some were arguing amongst themselves the other day, one broke off and approached me to ask what year 9/11 happened. I told her, but afterwards I of course teased them all a little for not knowing, and then one piped up “Give us a break, we weren’t even born then”.
