People Share What It’s Really Like to Date Long Distance

I would describe it is “terrible.” Long distance is incredibly hard. In addition to physically missing the person, it’s tough to discuss issues over text/phone/email. And then when you’re together, you are reluctant to discuss things because you have such limited time and you don’t want anything to sour your time together. So little things build up and build up and cause resentment.

I spent the better part of two years in a LDR and it was a VERY lonely experience., you don’t get to share the day to day experiences with that person. you miss out on so much of life with them, and the bond that you ultimately build when you are sharing every day together takes longer to create.

We did seven. years. of long distance (makes me feel exhausted now, looking back) before finally being able to move to the same country. Our relationship feels more solid for it, although it did mean in many aspects our lives were on hold and it may have made us less patient now when it comes to the pace at which things are moving along (career- and savings wise, family planning, etc.) I do believe that, with the right person, it’s entirely possible.

I met someone during a study abroad term, and our home universities were in different provinces, and our homes were as well. It was terrible. We didn’t have a solution/way to close the distance, short of getting immigration-married at 22. He’s the only person who I still loved deeply well after we decided the relationship needed to end.

We’ve been 600 miles apart for the length of the relationship. I’ll be moving closer to him soon, but we will have done LD for a year and a half. The hardest part was not knowing when I would see him next. I quite liked having space, but I needed that bit of certainty. We usually end up seeing each other every 2 months for a week or so.
