I walked into a bar in Kenya because it had a cool name. It was filled with the most gorgeous African women all dressed to the nines and very flirtatious. Turns out I accidentally walked into a brothel. Oops.

When I had just moved to France as a teen and was learning to speak French, I went to my friend’s house and she had a load of kittens. The next day I was telling another friend about them and I said ‘j’adore les chats’ except I didn’t pronounce ‘chat’ as ‘cha’ but as ‘chatte’. When you pronounce it like ‘chatte’ it actually means ‘p*ssy’. So I accidentally went round the school telling my new friends that I loved p*ssy, which is not the case.

The first time I got drunk I was at a hostel in Florence. My friend and I were playing some drinking game with really cheap alcohol called “Hell Beer.” I vaguely remember a theological debate with a Canadian dude my age, while a 50ish year old Indian guy watched in silence from across the room. Woke up with “Buddha is better than Jesus” written on my arm and the Indian guy’s phone number in my pocket.

My friend and I were in Brazil, he was running an ultramarathon and we had forgotten the bag balm to keep things from rubbing against all the other things. KY jelly or diaper rash cream are commonly available substitutes for this purpose. Neither of us speaks any Portuguese so we had to attempt to explain one or both of these terms to the clerk with gestures and single words pulled out of the dictionary. We first tried for the diaper cream, and got close with creme para bebe bumbum or “cream for the bebe’s bottom.” At this point, my friend noticed the sex lube (KY jelly) in a case under a counter and started pointing excitedly at that. The clerk gave us a look of utter horror.
